We are exposed to an unprecedented number and variety of environmental toxins, including heavy metals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, food additives, medications, and household and personal care products. Toxins can be in the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. They can surround us in our homes or workplace. Some toxins also come from our own bodies as by-products of natural processes or due to stress or inflammation.
EVERYONE IS EXPOSED
You may think you are avoiding toxins but this is impossible:
- In 1990, a study was carried out in the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea where people in villages were growing their own food and practicing primitive agricultural techniques. There was no use of chemical, pesticides, herbicides etc anywhere near their villages. They lived in isolation with the nearest village was at least 5 days walking distance. When researchers tested the breast milk of breastfeeding mothers they found levels of DDT higher than the allowed limit even though this banned pesticide had not been used anywhere near these villages. This shows that these type of chemicals, called organochlorines, are ubiquitous. These chemicals can travel long distances from their original point of use through the atmosphere. They can evaporate into the air and be carried by wind currents, eventually falling back to the ground far from their source.
- In 2004, the Environmental Working Group in the USA analyzed umbilical cord blood and found 287 chemicals. These were obviously all passing into the baby. Of the 287 chemicals, 180 were known to cause cancer in humans and 217 were toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 caused birth defects or abnormal development.
- PFAS are a class of about 16,000 compounds used to make products resistant to water, stains and heat. They are called “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down and have been found to accumulate in humans. You are exposed to them through water, food (beef, dairy, eggs, rice & coffee to name a few), inhalation and via your skin. They have been used in firefighting foams, insecticides, food packaging, non-stick frypans, clothing and cosmetics. These chemicals are linked to cancer, auto-immune diseases, neurodegenerative disease, birth defects, liver disease, thyroid disease, plummeting sperm counts and a range of other serious health problems.
These examples clearly demonstrate that everyone is exposed to toxins. The best way to reduce the burden is to limit exposure and enhance your body’s detoxification systems.
OUR ABILITY TO DETOXIFY
Every day, with every breath we take and in every cell of our body, detoxification is constantly working. This process helps remove or change harmful substances, (toxins), to keep us safe and healthy. However often our body cannot cope.
Think of detoxification like a bucket placed under a dripping tap, where the tap represents your exposure to toxins. Sometimes the tap drips slowly, and other times it pours fast. To keep up, you need to regularly empty the bucket and make sure it’s not blocked or overflowing.

Your ability to detoxify depends on finding the right balance and can be affected by things like your genes, age, gender, diet, environment, and health. Just like any other stress on your body, too many toxins can overwhelm you. This can upset your gut, mess with your immune system, disrupt your hormones, and affect your energy levels, possibly leading to long-term health problems.
Conditions linked to toxicity include:
- Fertility Issues
- All autoimmune diseases e.g. Hashimotos, Rheumatoid arthritis, Crohns etc
- Neurodegenerative diseases e.g. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
- Cancer
- Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia
- Learning and Behavioural Disorders
Conditions that can benefit from detoxification support include:
- Allergies
- Chronic skin issues
- Chronic headaches and migraines
- High “bad” cholesterol and/or triglycerides
- Hormonal imbalances
- Mood issues
- PMS
WANT TO KNOW & DO MORE?
- Understand your exposure to toxins by downloading our simple GUIDE.
- Consider testing for toxins with either:
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Test that can show you high levels of toxins in your body such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Its a non-invasive test that will also show you mineral deficiencies. Find out more HERE.
OR the more expensive but very insightful:
Organic Acids Test (OAT) along with Glyphosate test (one of the most highly used pesticides in the world) and TOXDetect test. The TOXDetect test checks for toxins that are not heavy metals (whereas the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis will show heavy metals in excess in the body).
- View a sample report for OAT
- View a sample report for Glyphosate
- View a sample report for TOXDetect
The OAT and add on tests for toxins are worth considering if you have:
- Mental and Behavioural Disorders: Anxiety, Depression, Schizophrenia, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, etc.
- Chronic fatigue
- Digestive issues
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Autoimmune Disorders
- Metabolic Disorders: Diabetes or Insulin resistance
- Neurological Disorders: Parkinson’s, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Seizures
- Obesity
- Fibromyalgia
- Tick-Borne Infections: Lyme, Bartonella, etc.
- Skin Conditions: Eczema, Psoriasis, and Acne
- Are chronically unwell
Or you just want to optimise health!
