FOODS THAT LOWER YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

  • Sugary beverages (e.g. soft drinks, cordials, juice, etc.)
  • Refined carbohydrates (e.g. white bread, pasta, crackers, etc.)
  • Sugary processed baked goods (e.g. cakes, doughnuts, etc.)
  • Takeaway fast food, especially fried foods (e.g. hot chips, fried chicken, etc.)

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM STRONG

General dietary practices that help to reduce inflammation and support immune health include:

  • Eating plenty of homecooked soups, broths and slow-cooked foods nourish and replenish the body of nutrients typically depleted in states of chronic immune weakness. Prepare these with flavourful, warming ingredients (e.g. ginger, garlic, onions, black pepper, and chilli) to help alleviate aches and pains.   • Stay well-hydrated. Aim to consume approximately 2-2.5L of filtered water daily. Add a slice of citrus for extra vitamin C.
  • Sip on warming teas. While there are many herbs and roots that can be made into immune supportive teas (like ginger, garlic, thyme and oregano), green tea is one of the best brews! Green tea is loaded with disease-fighting antioxidant polyphenols, the most well-researched being epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This compound helps fight inflammation, regulate immune activity and offer antiviral support.
  • Aim to eat an abundance of antioxidant-rich ingredients to reduce chronic inflammation. In general, eat a diverse range of fresh and vibrantly-coloured fruits and vegetables.
